Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina, Virginia
Experiencing “America’s Favorite Drive”
A drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway is meant to be slow paced and
relaxing. A stop at almost any overlook or trail will reveal much of the
natural and cultural history here. The Parkway meanders 469 miles
between Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains National Parks, so
explore the many communities along the way that make our region so
special. Enjoy the view, but watch the road!
The Blue Ridge Parkway is designed for slow-paced travel, something we
are not accustomed to in this day and age! Overlooks, trails, picnic and
camping areas, and a multitude of developed areas await the visitor who
has time to explore. These will introduce you to the natural and cultural
history of our region.
Winter can hang around in the Blue Ridge into April, especially at the skiff
of snow, so be prepared for winter even if you left home thinking spring
had arrived for certain! Check road closures at (828) 298 0398 and always
have a few extra clothes or emergency supplies when venturing into the
mountains this time of year.
Food and Lodging
Four lodges and six restaurants are scattered along the Parkway and
most are open from late April through the fall color season. The Peaks of
Otter lodge and restaurant north of Roanoke, VA is open year round. Visit
the many adjacent communities along the Parkway to experience regional
hospitality and cuisine.
Climate
Winter weather conditions are a possibility from late fall into early spring
and can vary tremdously from the weather in the surrounding valleys or
piedmont region. Winter conditions can be severe at higher elevations of
the Parkway. Check forecasts before your trip to the mountains and
always have a few emergency supplies in the trunk of your car.
The Parkway connects Shenandoah National Park near Waynesboro, VA
(Milepost 0) with Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Cherokee, NC
(Milepost 469). There are entrances and exits at all major federal and state
highways and part of a Parkway experience is getting into the towns and
communities of the region. Asheville and Boone, NC and Roanoke, VA are
the largest cities along the way. In Virginia, Interstates 64, 81, and 77 all
have directions for accessing the Parkway. The same is true for
Interstates 40 and 26 in North Carolina.
