Colorado National Monument
United States National Parks - a network of nearly
400 natural, cultural and recreational sites across
the nation. The treasures in this system – the first
of its kind in the world –have been set aside by the
American people to preserve, protect, and share,

Colorado National Monument
Colorado National Monument preserves one of the grand landscapes of
the American West. Sheer-walled canyons, towering monoliths, colorful
formations, desert bighorn sheep, soaring eagles, and a spectacular road
reflect the environment and history of the plateau-and-canyon country.
Located within Colorado National Monument's 32 square miles is a
fascinating landscape of deep canyons and soaring cliffs. Colorado
National Monument is a little-known treasure full of surprises, and offers
an interesting array of activities for visitors of all abilities and interests.
Hiking, sightseeing and bicycling are just a few of the exciting choices
awaiting visitors.
With elevations ranging from 4,000 ft to nearly 7,000 ft, weather at
Colorado National Monument is represented by semi?desert and upland
climates.
Colorado National Monument Visitor Center is an excellent place to start
your trip. A 12-minute program orients the visitor to the monument and
the area. The visitor center also has exhibits and a bookstore, as well as
restroom.
Rim Rock Drive-A 23-mile scenic drive will lead you along the rim of a
colorful panorama of deep, sheer-sided canyons, and high rock towers.
Wayside exhibits at pullouts along the drive provide information about the
natural and human history of the park. Allow 45 minutes of driving time,
plus additional time for walking, photography, or stopping at pullouts.

Annual precipitation averages 11.03 inches, fairly evenly spread
throughout the year. August through October is usually the wettest period,
but there is often a peak in March as well.
Temperatures are highly variable with summer highs ranging into the low
100s in the valley floor and in some cases can reach 110+ inside the
neighboring canyon country. Winters at the monument are generally mild
with lows occasionally dipping into the sub?zero readings.
The annual mean high temperature is 61 degrees Fahrenheit, and mean
low temperature is 39 degrees Fahrenheit. Snowfall averages
approximately 38 inches annually. Heaviest accumulations usually occur
during January and February.
